Multimedia Elevator Communication Now Required in Florida

Multimedia Elevator Communication Now Required in Florida

As of January 1st, 2024, the State of Florida has adopted updates to the ASME A17.1-2013 Safety Code for Escalators and Elevators pertaining to emergency communications.

Other jurisdictions, including NYC, have already adopted these updates, and others across the USA are to follow.

Per these requirements, elevator systems must include, in addition to the standard two-way audio:

  • A text interface for two-way messaging between passengers and emergency responders; and,
  • Video equipment for remote monitoring of the cab floor.

The texting interface meets the needs of hearing- or speech-impaired passengers, while the video monitoring feature equips first responders to better assess the situation inside the cab – if, for example, a person has fallen unconscious on the floor and is unable to communicate via the phone. Video monitoring also helps to eliminate unnecessary trips by mechanics in the event of accidental button pushes.

To reap these benefits and get compliant with state code, elevator companies and building owners should invest in a dependable multimedia communication system. The WUR-COM Multimedia Communicator by Wurtec meets all requirements and is backed by Wurtec’s expertise and signature customer service.

“We’ve gotten a great response to the WUR-COM in Florida,” says Wurtec Miami branch manager Freddy Kasper, “especially since Wurtec has already built a lot of trust and rapport with customers from our other elevator products.”
